It was 2:10 a.m. when Farida’s phone lit up.
She was in Muscat. Her father, a retired schoolteacher, was 4,000 kilometres away, and the doctor on the other end of the call was calm in the way doctors are when the news is not. Three of his heart arteries were badly narrowed. Surgery, not stents, was the recommendation, and soon.
Farida did what most of us do at that hour. She searched. Within twenty minutes she had forty tabs, three cost figures that disagreed by a factor of ten, and one question she could not type into any search box: who will actually be holding my father’s heart, and can I trust them?
This is a composite story based on the kind of messages patients’ families send us. Names and details are changed. It is not a real patient.
If you are reading this with a report in one hand and a hundred questions in your head, you are in the right place. This guide explains heart bypass surgery (CABG) in plain language, introduces cardiac surgeons practising at eight Bangalore hospital groups, sets out what affects cost, and walks through the journey step by step. It is written for families in India and for patients travelling from abroad.

1. Heart Bypass in Bangalore — Quick Answers
2. What Bypass Surgery Is, and Who May Need It
Your heart muscle is fed by coronary arteries. Over years, fatty plaque can narrow them until the muscle is starved of oxygen. That can cause chest pain on effort, breathlessness, or a heart attack. In bypass surgery the surgeon takes a healthy blood vessel from your chest wall, arm or leg and stitches it beyond the blockage, building a new route for blood, much like a flyover that avoids a traffic jam.
Bypass is not the answer for every blocked artery. Cardiologists often weigh surgery when several arteries are affected, when the main left artery is involved, when diabetes is present, or when stents are unlikely to give lasting relief. Your own recommendation must come from your angiogram and your doctors. Nothing in a web article can replace that.
3. Four Ways Bypass Can Be Done
Not every hospital offers every method, and the safest choice depends on your arteries, lungs, kidneys and overall health.
On-Pump (Conventional) CABG
The heart is briefly stopped while a heart-lung machine takes over. It offers a still, bloodless field and is a well-established method for complex multi-vessel disease.
Off-Pump (Beating Heart) CABG
Grafts are sewn while the heart keeps beating, without the heart-lung machine. It suits selected patients and requires an experienced team.
Minimally Invasive (Keyhole) CABG
Done through small incisions between the ribs instead of splitting the breastbone, where anatomy allows. Recovery can be quicker, but not every patient qualifies.
Robotic-Assisted Surgery
The surgeon operates through tiny ports using robotic instruments for part or all of the operation. Availability in Bangalore is limited to specific centres and cases.
4. Cardiac Surgeons at Leading Bangalore Hospitals
Below are cardiothoracic surgeons whose profiles appear on their hospitals’ official pages or on public directories. This is not a ranking and not an endorsement. 6. What Affects Cost — and Published Reference Ranges
Bypass surgery does not have one price. The final bill depends on how many grafts are needed, the technique, room category, ICU days, implants or devices, medicines, diabetes or kidney care, and whether complications occur. We do not quote a fixed price here because an honest quote requires your angiogram.
| Source of range | Published figure | Read it as |
|---|---|---|
| Our Jayadeva Hospital guide | ₹1.5–3 lakh for CABG | Government-institute pricing, ward-based |
| Health insurance portal (city average) | ₹2.5–5 lakh for heart bypass | General Bangalore average across hospitals |
| International medical-travel directory | About US$8,700–11,000 | Indicative range for foreign patients; hospitals quote “on request” |
These are third-party or older published figures for orientation only, not offers. Actual estimates from a hospital may be higher or lower.

7. The Journey for International Patients
Here is what a typical journey looks like. Your surgeon will set the exact plan.

8. For Indian Patients: Insurance, Second Opinions and Questions to Ask
Insurance and Cashless
Ask your insurer for pre-authorisation early. Check room-rent limits, sub-limits for robotic surgery and whether your policy’s waiting period has passed.
Second Opinion
Getting a second cardiac opinion before surgery is normal and sensible. Send the same reports to two centres and compare recommendations.
Government and Trust Options
Public institutes such as Jayadeva offer cardiac surgery at lower published rates, with waiting times that vary. Compare them with private options.
Choose by Location
Pick a hospital your family can reach easily. North, south and east Bangalore all have cardiac centres.
- Do I need bypass, or could stenting or medicines work for me?
- Which technique do you recommend, and why?
- Which grafts will you use, and how many?
- How many similar operations do you and this hospital perform?
- What are the main risks in my case, given my diabetes, kidney or lung health?
- What is included in the estimate, and what could add to it?
9. Recovery and Risks
Most people walk with support within a day or two, and the breastbone usually takes around six to eight weeks to heal. Many return to light activity in stages, but timelines differ. Cardiac rehabilitation, a heart-healthy diet, medicines taken on time, and control of blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking protect the new grafts.
Every operation carries risk. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, abnormal heart rhythm such as atrial fibrillation, kidney problems, stroke and, rarely, death. Your surgeon should explain your personal risk before you consent.

Final Word
Farida’s father did not need a perfect answer at 2 a.m. He needed a clear next step. That is what good information can give you: a list of questions, a fair way to compare options, and someone who answers when you write.
Whether you live in Bangalore or are planning a flight, you do not have to work through this alone. Send your reports and we will help you take the next step, with no pressure and no charge for our coordination.
