About Dr. Sandeep Nayak
Dr. Sandeep Nayak is one of Bangalore’s most widely recognised surgical oncologists, known internationally as the pioneer of two original cancer surgery techniques: RABIT (Robotic-Assisted Breast-Axillo Insufflated Thyroidectomy) — a scarless approach to thyroid surgery — and MIND (Minimally Invasive Neck Dissection) for head and neck cancers. Born in Kannur, Kerala, in 1976, he has been active in medicine since 1999 and has built his career around minimally invasive and robotic cancer surgery over the last 15+ years.
He is the founder and Chief of Surgical Oncology at MACS Clinic, Jayanagar — a dedicated surgical oncology practice rather than a general hospital department — and currently holds the roles of Chairman, Oncology Services (Karnataka) and Executive Director, Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery at KIMS Hospital, Bangalore. He also consults at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, as Senior Director, Surgical Oncology. Between 2012 and 2017, he served as assistant professor of surgical oncology at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, where he trained the next generation of surgical oncologists.
Dr. Nayak has personally performed more than 10,200 cancer surgeries, averaging roughly four operations per working day, across colorectal, thyroid, head & neck, gastric, liver, kidney, prostate, ovarian, adrenal, pancreatic, and lung cancers. He is also the founder-trustee of the Samrohana Cancer Foundation in Bengaluru, which supports cancer patients and survivors.
Techniques He Pioneered
Dr. Nayak developed and published several original minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques that are now used in cancer centres beyond his own practice.
Robotic-Assisted Breast-Axillo Insufflated Thyroidectomy
A scarless robotic approach to thyroid cancer surgery that avoids a visible neck incision, aiming for a better cosmetic outcome alongside oncological safety.
Minimally Invasive Neck Dissection
A minimally invasive alternative to open neck dissection for head and neck cancers, reducing scarring and recovery time. Recognised with the Pampanagowda Video Award (2016).
Robotic Infraclavicular Approach for MIND
A robotic evolution of the MIND technique, using an infraclavicular access route. Recipient of the KS International Innovation Award.
Video Endoscopic Inguinal Lymphadenectomy
A minimally invasive technique for groin lymph node removal, published as a retrospective study comparing outcomes with open inguinal block dissection.
